Synthetic vs Human Hair Wig Care Explained

Synthetic and human hair wigs look similar when they are new, but they need different care. Synthetic fibres prefer cool water, a synthetic-safe shampoo and no heat. Human hair can be styled and conditioned more like natural hair. Understanding this difference is the key to a wig that lasts. This guide explains how to care for each type of wig properly.

What is the difference between synthetic and human hair?

Synthetic wigs are made from man-made fibres that are designed to hold a style without heat. Wigs made from human hair behave much more like natural hair. They can be brushed, conditioned and styled, but they also absorb moisture and react to heat and products in a similar way.

Before you wash or style your wig, check its label or product description so you know which type you own. The care routine depends on it.

How should you wash each type of wig?

Both types should be washed in lukewarm or cool water, at no more than about 30°C, and never rubbed or twisted. The shampoo is where the two types differ.

  • Synthetic wigs: use a shampoo labelled for synthetic hair and avoid anything with heavy oils or harsh detergents.
  • Human hair wigs: use a mild shampoo for natural hair, and add a light conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends only.
  • Both types: rinse thoroughly, because leftover product can leave the hair dull or sticky.

Heat, drying and styling

Heat is the biggest difference between the two. Synthetic fibres should never be dried with a hairdryer or styled with straighteners, curling irons or hot rollers. Human hair can tolerate gentle heat, but it is still better to air dry and keep the temperature low.

Drying a synthetic wig

Pat the wig with a towel, then place it on a wig stand or foam head away from direct sunlight and heaters. Let it dry naturally. Shape the fringe and length with your fingers while it is still slightly damp.

Drying a human hair wig

Air drying is the gentlest option. If you use a dryer, choose a cool setting and keep it moving, and do not brush the hair while it is wet.

Storage and everyday care

Whatever the type, store the wig on a stand or in a box, away from heat, direct sun and humidity. Brush it gently with a wide-tooth comb from the ends upwards, starting when the hair is dry.

How can you tell which type of wig you have?

If you are unsure, check the product description or the label that came with the wig. Descriptions usually state whether the hair is synthetic or human. Pay attention to the texture as well: synthetic wigs often hold their style very evenly, while human hair wigs tend to move and feel more like natural hair when touched. When in doubt, treat the wig as synthetic and use the gentler, heat-free routine, which is safer for both types.

Common mistakes with each type

  • Using a hairdryer or heat tools on a synthetic wig, which can permanently change its shape
  • Using a shampoo meant for natural hair on a synthetic wig, which may leave the fibres dull
  • Brushing a human hair wig while it is wet, which causes breakage and tangles
  • Applying conditioner to the roots, which can make the cap feel heavy

Avoiding these mistakes is often the quickest way to keep a wig in good condition for longer. Small changes to your routine can make a noticeable difference.

Checking the result after washing

After rinsing and drying, check the wig in good light. The hair should feel light and smooth, the colour should look even, and there should be no sticky residue near the roots or along the cap. If anything still feels heavy or dull, rinse again with cool water and repeat the drying step. Taking this extra minute helps you spot a problem early and keeps the wig looking natural.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the same shampoo for synthetic and human hair wigs?

It is better not to. A shampoo made for synthetic hair is gentler on man-made fibres, while a shampoo for natural hair suits human hair. Using the right one helps the wig keep its colour and texture.

Can a synthetic wig be ironed or straightened?

No. Synthetic fibres can melt or lose their shape when exposed to heat. Choose a style that does not need heat to look good, and avoid heat styling tools altogether.

Does human hair need conditioner?

Often, yes. A light conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends helps keep human hair soft and easier to comb. Use only a small amount and rinse it out well.
