Streak-free self-tanning: a step-by-step routine that works even the first time

Self-tanning mousse is the most forgiving format: it dries fast, doesn't stain clothes and, with the right prep, doesn't streak. Nine out of ten failed tans weren't caused by a bad product but by skipped preparation. Here is the whole routine.

The day before: exfoliate and remove hair

Remove hair (shaving, wax) at least 12–24 hours before applying, then do a gentle full-body exfoliation – focus on elbows, knees, ankles and the backs of the hands, where the skin is drier and colour builds up. Don't exfoliate on the day itself; the skin would be irritated.

Just before: dry and cream-free

Shower with lukewarm water without oil and dry thoroughly. Skip body cream – the only exception is a thin layer of cream on elbows, knees and ankles, which stops those spots going darker than the rest.

Application: mitt and long strokes

Never apply mousse with a bare hand – palms darken instantly. The MineTan applicator mitt spreads it thin and even. Work bottom to top: ankles → calves → thighs → stomach → back (a second person or a handled applicator helps) → arms. Use long circular strokes and a thin layer; two thin layers beat one thick one.

Face, hands and feet

  • Face: mix the mousse with a little moisturiser (1 : 1) and apply like a mask – a softer shade that matches the body.
  • Hands: wipe what's left on the mitt over the backs of the hands, fingers spread, wrist bent.
  • Feet: leftovers only, never a fresh dose – or you get dark ankles.

Development time and the first shower

Marrocan mousse develops for 6–8 hours; an early shower (2–3 h) gives a lighter shade for the first time. Rinse with water only, no soap, don't rub – pat dry. The full shade shows within 24 hours.

Making the tan last

Moisturise daily (dry skin flakes faster), avoid long hot baths and chlorinated water, skip exfoliation. The tan lasts 5–7 days; top up every 4–5 days with a thin layer. Before a new full application always exfoliate the remains first so you don't layer.

The most common mistakes

  1. A thick layer "to be safe" – streaks as it dries.
  2. Exfoliating on the day – uneven absorption.
  3. No mitt – orange palms for a week.
  4. Deodorant before applying – greenish underarms (reaction with aluminium).

The mousse is paraben-free and suitable for sensitive skin; patch-test on a small area the first time.
