An everyday bag: shopper, crossbody or mini? How to choose the one you'll actually carry

The best bag isn't the prettiest one in the photo but the one you reach for in the morning without thinking. Three questions narrow the choice to two or three pieces: What do I carry? How do I move during the day? What will I wear it with?

1. What you carry – size

Lay everything you carry daily on a table. If a laptop or tablet is there, you need a shopper with a flat base at least 35 cm wide. If it's a wallet, phone, keys and lipstick, a crossbody or a larger mini bag is enough – and your back will thank you.

2. How you move – carrying

• Car and office: a hand or forearm bag; short handles, firm shape. AIRMÉZ keeps its shape even half-empty and sits on the forearm.

3. What you'll wear it with – colour and material

The first bag in a wardrobe should be neutral (black, beige, brown, olive) – it goes with everything. Details you only notice after a week

1. Base: a firm base = the bag stands, doesn't fall over or lose shape.
2. Lining: light lining – you'll find nothing in a dark one.
3. Zip vs. magnet: zip for transport and travel, magnet for quick access in the car.
4. Weight when empty: anything over 700 g you'll feel by lunch.

Care

Store the bag stuffed with paper in a fabric dust bag, wipe faux leather with a damp cloth, spot-clean textile. Handles take the most strain – alternate carrying in hand and on the forearm.
