How to Wash a Wig at Home, Step by Step
27 September 2026 · 6 min read · Redakcia Beautimess

Knowing how to wash a wig at home is simpler than most people think. Fill a basin with lukewarm water, use a gentle shampoo and wash the wig without rubbing or twisting. Then let it air dry on a stand. The steps below explain how to wash a wig at home, whether it is synthetic or made from human hair.
What you need before you start
You do not need special equipment. A few simple items make the process easier and protect the fibres or hair.
- A clean basin or sink, large enough for the wig to move freely in the water
- Lukewarm water, around 30°C at most
- A mild shampoo suitable for your wig type
- A wide-tooth comb for brushing out tangles
- A soft towel, plus a wig stand or foam head for drying

How to wash a wig step by step
Work through these steps in order. Patience matters more than speed, because gentle handling is what keeps the wig looking fresh for longer.
- Brush the wig gently while it is dry, starting at the ends and working up towards the roots, to remove loose tangles.
- Fill the basin with lukewarm water and keep the temperature at or below about 30°C.
- Add a small amount of shampoo and swirl the water until it is evenly mixed.
- Lower the wig into the water and move it gently up and down. Do not rub, scrub or twist it.
- Leave it to soak for a few minutes, then drain the basin.
- Rinse the wig in cool water until the water runs clear.
- If the wig needs it, apply a small amount of conditioner suited to your wig type to the mid-lengths and ends only, then rinse again.
- Press out the excess water with a towel. Do not wring it out.
Synthetic or human hair: what changes?
The basic method is the same for both types, but the products and small details differ. Checking the wig type before you start prevents the most common problems.
Synthetic wigs
Choose a shampoo labelled for synthetic hair and keep the water cool. Synthetic fibres do not need heat to look good, and high temperatures can make them lose their shape. Avoid hot water and heat styling tools altogether.
Wigs made from human hair
Human hair responds well to a mild shampoo for natural hair and a light conditioner. It can be detangled gently after washing, but it still needs careful handling. Use lukewarm water, because hot water can leave the hair dry and tangled.

How to dry a wig without damaging it
Drying is where many wigs get damaged, so keep the process slow and gentle. Lay the wig on a towel or place it on a wig stand in a room with good airflow, away from direct sunlight and radiators. Shape the hair with your fingers while it is still damp, and let it dry completely before brushing it again.
Do not use a hairdryer on synthetic wigs. For human hair, a cool setting is the safest option if you must use a dryer, although air drying is always gentler.
How often should you wash a wig?
There is no fixed schedule. As a rough guide, many people wash a wig every few weeks with regular wear, and less often if it is worn only occasionally. Signs that it is time for a wash include a visible build-up of product, a dull look or an unpleasant smell.
A simple routine for regular wear
If you wear your wig most days, a short routine between full washes keeps it looking fresh and makes each wash easier. You do not need to do all of this every day, but a regular rhythm helps you notice problems early.
- After wearing, let the wig rest on a stand so the hair can settle and the cap can keep its shape
- Once a week, brush the wig gently while it is dry, starting from the ends
- Check the hair for dust, product residue or a change in smell
- When the signs appear, wash the wig using the steps above and let it dry fully before wearing it again
Keeping a note of when you last washed the wig is a simple way to stay on top of the routine, especially if you wear several wigs in rotation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wash a wig in a washing machine?
It is not recommended. A machine can tangle the hair, stretch the cap and damage the fibres. Hand washing is gentler and gives you far more control.
Can I use ordinary shampoo on a wig?
Ordinary shampoo can be too harsh for some wigs, especially synthetic ones. A mild shampoo suited to your wig type is the safer choice.
How long does a wig take to dry?
Drying time depends on the thickness of the hair, the room temperature and the airflow. Most wigs need several hours to dry completely, so it is best to wash yours when you will not need it the same day.
